I once read a story which said, “One day, a man found the cocoon of a butterfly. He sat and watched the butterfly for hours when the cocoon started to open. The butterfly was trying to come out, but stopped. He noticed that it wasn’t making any progress. He decided to get a pair of scissors and cut the cocoon open. The butterfly had a swollen body and shriveled legs. The man didn’t know if something was wrong with the butterfly, so he waited for it to open its wings and fly. But, that time never came. The man didn’t understand that the butterfly trying to squeeze itself out of the cocoon is what causes the fluid from the body to the wings to prepare the wings for flying out of the cocoon. The point of this story is that our struggles in life is what develops our strengths. Without struggles, we won’t grow or get stronger as an individual, so it is important to get through our challenges on our own rather than relying on others.”
This story helped me because I had a habit of relying on others. I didn’t necessarily want to do something unless it was approved by others. I learned that in order for you to be able to grow, learn, and improve that you need to do things on your own. When you are struggling do not rely on someone else to fix you struggle, learn from it and take action. It’ll help you in the long run and you will learn independence and grow as an individual.
